Actually, the board is designed to "lock" down. It's designed as a wedge so when you lower it, it naturally sticks in place. In fact I have my crew "drop" it the last 1.5 feet to get it as fully down as possible.
As for changing it, you'd have to reshape the trunk so that it's not wedge shaped, or somehow work out some spacers. I don't think either would be easy to do and still retain the same depth.
