Re: Centerboard box
I'm not a geek y'all................................. I have been tryin g toi figure out how to get the pics that Jim sent me on e-mail, from there to a file that photobucket will accept. Haven't had any luck though. Any ideas?
Second thought, and affirms my first view of the picks: The lower CB trunk area is NO WHERE NEAR beefy enough!!! It looks to be glassed in with at MOST one layer of roving and a few layers of mat. Roving comes up from the floor to tab the trunk to the floor but at the top of that roving tape, I see nothing but some very THIN mat with what looks to be one possible layer of roving on the gelcoat [inner] side of the board trunk!!!!!

Re: Centerboard box
Dave is right about the construction. There was thin layer of glass and gelcoat on the leading interior edge of the board box, and a heavier layer, including some roving, coming up from the hull. The two layers were not bonded together in anyway, nor was there any filler that might have absorbed some of the impact. It will be rebuilt heavier! We're also thinking of adding a thwart connecting the head to the galley area that would serve as an external brace to this part of the board box.
Photos are posted as public on my phanfare account. (www.phanfare.com/James Kloss)
Repairs will be done by Dave McBride (dccboatworks@yahoo.com) who recently completed essentially similar repairs to a friend's Corsair F-27.
And of course I need to learn to stay away from rocks!

Re: Centerboard box
My opinion on this whole thing is that the keel trunk area of ANY boat should be built strong enough to sit for days on a reef without buckling or breaking in ANY way!!!! That and the mast step are supposed to be bullet and idiot proof [no offense, just a phrase] !!!!! It would have been a simple matter during the manufacture of ALL 7.9s to beef up the lower trunk section with more/better glass and bracing. I will DEFINITELY be taking a good long look at mine and doing some pre DOOOOOOOOOUGH beefing up!!!!
Re: Centerboard box
I'd be happy to post picts here of the centerboard and also post them on my website for reference.

Re: Centerboard box
Is the link to Phanfare working for others? It's not working for me. I'd like to see the centerboard trunk photos.

Re: Centerboard box / crush box?
Several local sailors, commiserating with me, have extolled the virtue of having a "crush box" built into the daggerboard assembly. It seems that on some boats this is a foam filled area aft of the centerboard trunk that is designed to collapse but maintain water-tight integrity (and be relatively easy to repair). I'm not sure how that could be built into a 7.9, but I wonder if the same thing can be accomplished by hollowing out a few inches at the front and back of the top of the board itself.
Does anybody have any experience with a "crush box" for a 7.9? Suggestions?
(PS, at least two other boats have had encounters with the reef since my incident; as a local old salt said, "if you sail here, you're going to hit."
