7.9 Headliner

I want to solicit some opinions on the the 7.9 headliner. I'm thinking of removing the carpet headliner even though it is still in good shape. There is some mildew which is annoying but is it worth removing the rug. My trepidation surounds two issues. I don't know what to expect to see underneath regarding fit and finish and resale value in the unlikely event I should sell the boat. If I remove the carpet I will refinish with an epoxy paint. Also, what is the approximate weight of the interior carpet?

While I have not removed my entire headliner, I have cut away secions in order to recore several spots on the cabin top forward of the mast, and another section fwd and aft of the port chainplate. All you see is woven cloth - medium brown in color. Not an attractive sight. I guess that's why class rules require painting of the interior when the fabric is removed.


I re-glued my headliner in place with liquid out-of-the-can contact glue.

Although the stock liner looked fairly nice to most eyes when new, it rapidly succumbs to mildew stains from condensation [or leaks! ] dripping from the fastener heads. Check out some of these alternatives as an interior coating. These products are TOUGH stuff, easy to apply and won't kill you while being applied in an enclosed area !!!

The class doesn't 'require' painting, they allow it. You can have a headliner or paint.

Personally, I don't mind the head liner. The hull liner is another story. I'm planning to remove it an paint. I think it will help keep the boat drier, and be easier to clean.

My original concern was the coarseness of the interior layup. My liner is in surprisingly good shape and still dry. Fleck, I heard you were fast at Key West.

You DEFINITELY wouldn't want to coat the surface that remains when the carpet is removed with some real clean up work!
