I'm trying to adjust my cascade backstay so that the blocks are tubelocked with max headstay tension. I have done the maststep repair and don't want to over compress the rig again.
Is there some rule of thump for safe mastbend? Anyway to measure?
I have the older mast.
Thanks.

Funny,
I've always used rule of thump.

Larry, the problem is/was the rotten deck, NOT the headstay tension. Just the compression of the upper and lower shrouds pushing on the deck will make it cave in if all is not well structurally. Your sails will tell you when you've reached the practical limit of backstay tension. It will be impossible to get a really tight leech on the main even by standing up and using your legs on the mainsheet and the entry on the genoa/jib will become very flat and overly critical to steer to. Easing off the backstay just a tad will take care of both problems. Sometimes it only takes an inch or two, which on a 16:1 system means that the actual masthead crane is only moving up or down 1/16 to 1/8 of an inch!!!
