Chain Plate Caulk and Bed

Post by orion27 »

Can someone describe of diagram the way the chainplate deck fitting is fitted.
I would like to do a proper caulk and bed of the deck plate and the under plate.
How is the under deck plate fitted? Can it be slid down the plate away from the
under deck?

Thanks
Tom

Specifically is the under deck plate welded to the chain plate?

Now that I think about, it must be as it probably used to support the deck. So proper re-bed and
inspection would require removal of the chain plate.

You are correct. The chainplate does support the deck and must be removed.

While you have it out, do yourself a BIG favor by tearing out all of the balsa that you can get to without opening the hole anymore, tape up the underside and then fill with a mix of epoxy and high density filler. Then re-drill and re-mill the chainplate opening. This way, even if the area does develop a leak over time, none of the moisture can get into the balsa core.

My question is about the port chainplate. Mine does not have an under deck plate. Should there be one? Thanks, Tom Cassidy Gargle Blaster

Tom,
When we did this repair on Hot Tamale, the Port under deck plate was beuhnd the carpeting/liner so a visual inspection might miss it.

All, I had this e-mail back and forth with Tom, read from the bottom up to make sense. If I missed something here, please set me straight!

"That wouldn't be a bad idea just to cut down on flex/fatigue there from people walking. You could run masking tape on one side of the bulkhead as a back up form and then use some of that epoxy that mixes coming out of the tube and run a thick bead on the other side, overfilling a little. Then pull a putty knife along the joint to smooth it out. That would fill the gap and bond the two together and be simpler and cleaner than glassing.

Ahh, you are the man. That makes so much sense. Now, should the bulkheads on either side of the head be tabbed to the underside of the deck. I should mention that the overhead carpeting on my boat had been removed by the previous owner leaving a 1/4-1/2" gap. Tom

Tom, I didn't answer because my boat is still torn apart and under a tent!!!! :(

I can't remember. What you say sounds strange, like the chainplates are on the wrong sides. The starboard side is supported by a bulkhead so it needs no lower support. From memory, the port side is open in there by the sink and the plate on the chainplate supports the deck in place of a bulkhead.

Hi Dave,

I'm not getting the answer that I need on the web site, so I thought I'd contact you directly. In the course of my now all too extensive deck repair, I removed the chainplates. The previous owner did glass around the opening as you had recommended. My question relates to the fact that my port chainplate does NOT have an underdeck support welded to it but the strbrd one does. It seems only logical that they both should have one, right? Thanks, Tom Cassidy "
