Hello there
The boat we are in the process of buying seems to have a problem with the daggerboard. The current owner says he isn't able to pull it up
Anyone know if this is a common problem, or what can be done about it? We're having the boat surveyed next week and hoping that will shed some light on the issue
The owner thinks that there possibly might be barnicles keeping it stuck, since the boat has been sitting in salt water in a slip for 10 years
Thanks everyone
Cara

That's a good guess, a quick dive will tell the tale.
Re: daggerboard won't come up
when we hauled #457 out of the Chesapeake, she had 4 yrs of marine growth on the bottom and the board. After scraping that off, we were able to lift the board.
pm me for details of how we got it unstuck.

Hi Tim
I talked to the current owner and he's worried that if we free the board and then lower it back down for the winter the same problem will happen again. Do you think it's a problem for us to free the board then leave it up over the winter with the boat at the slip? We won't be using it after October
Thanks Tim

It's usually preferable to keep the board up. There is a tang on top of the centerboard that should protrude through the deck when fully raised; there's a hole in the tang so the board can be pinned in the up position without strain on any of the tackle. It may be that the tang has bent slightly; if you remove the aft cover on the centerboard trunk you should be able to push the tang forward or backward enough to fit through the slot.
(That said, I usually just raise the board and double cleat the line).

If you are not using the boat after Oct. Why not haul it out of the water?
This way you can properly asses the needs regarding the board and the hull. You would be wise if you can to pull the board entirely. When we bought Hunting Party we pulled everything out of the boat and replaced anything that looked suspicious.
This would ensure that next spring would bring " NO WORRIES " sailing.

HI Jim and Mark, thanks
We thought about taking the boat out of the water, but we don't have a trailer yet, and the dry storage at this place is $277/month
We can get a slip for $180
Next spring we're going to pick it up and sail it up the inside passage to Skagway
Meanwhile we're looking for a trailer. We got a quote for $6500

If you do as you say I'd keep a close watch on the weather. Even though the 7.9 is self righting with the board up (meaning that most of the ballast is in the hull) the board still has a big damping effect when down, not to mention that it won't be banging around in the trunk. If you see bad weather with lots of wind and wave action expected it would be wise to lower the board and then raise it when the coast is clear again.
