Bottom Paint

Post by normbue »

With all the new bottom paints out there, has anyone found anything better than VC17? The water where we are, Lake Ozarks in Missouri, is probably warmer than where most of your are, but even VC17 seems to take more scrubbing to keep it clean than it used too..

I've heard Black Widow is excellent stuff. Not sure it can go on over VC17. Hard to find in some areas. Good luck.

This is an interesting question . . and I would like to learn more about it.

If you dry sail the boat, you do not need bottom paint.

But here on the warmest of the Sweetwater Seas (Lake Erie), some boats that are kept in the water do not have bottom coat either.

There seems to be about the same amount of green growth whether one uses bottom paint or not.

Bottom paint or no bottom paint, one needs to clean pretty much weekly.

Or am I full of it ??

Hi AJ. I'm the guy from whom you bought a used chute quite a few years ago . I sail a Slam out of Cedar Island Yacht Club in Canada.
I think bottom paint is necessary, not because it prevents all growth, but because it is much easier to remove whatever growth accumulates. And it definitely reduces growth. Let me know if you're able to find the Black Widow bottom paint.
