Board Position

Post by Jay »

We're pretty new to the class, sailing out of Sodus Bay on Lake Ontario. Myself and two friends partnered in the boat. I come out of 8 Meter and R Class boats, they ran a J33 for 20 years. Have a keel that lifts is new to us! We're wondering how much some owners adjust their keel position during races? We've been pulling it up on spinnaker legs, and toying with it occasionally on other points of sail. Are your keel lift lines marked for reference?
Thanks for the tips. Much appreciated. Jay

Hello. You can mark the line with a permanent marker, which it turns out, is not really permanent. We count the number of revolutions on the winch, which is quite easy. We always have it up downwind as long as breeze is not too much. Halt or more on a reach.

Seems to work best when going directly down wind in light to moderate light winds. We leave some board down. All the way up and the steering can get squirrelly.

We've been bringing it all the way up downwind. Have messed with it a bit on reaches more this year than the first few seasons.
Need to spend some time and mark the line better so we have a more functional idea of where it's at.
Appreciate the input. Jay
