Outboard Motor
Hello,
I need to replace the outboard on my boat.
What motors are popular with the fleet that are available new, and why?
My 8HP Mariner has served us well, but has become unreliable and is on the heavy / overkill side of things.
Thanks,
Sam

Re: Outboard Motor
We are running a Tohatsu 6hp Sailpro.
It has been exceptional running premium fuel and more than enough.

Yup, 6HP Tohatsu works well. Weighs around 65 lbs or so.

Re: Outboard Motor
I had my old Nissan 2-stroke powerhead rebuilt and much prefer this motor. Its 20 lbs lighter than any 4-stroke I've found, or 10 lbs less with the extra long (25") shaft. If you can find one, this is a great combo.
Re: Outboard Motor
Unless you operate in really flat water . . .
an extra long shaft is the way to go.
I have an els Nissan 6hp
Note - I changed the impeller last year and was thinking of
doing it myself, but changed my mind cause the els makes
the job significantly harder. Job cost me $ 180 with a local
motor pro.

Re: Outboard Motor
Thank you for the responses.
What speed will the 6HP Tohatsu push the boat?
Does anyone have experience with a 5HP and what boat speed can be achieved?
I sail in an area where wind and current can be a big factor.
Thank you,
Sam

Re: Outboard Motor
3.5 kts at low rpm. 5 to 6 with higher throttle. This in under 2 ft waves.

Re: Outboard Motor
Is that with 5HP or 6HP?
Thank you,

Re: Outboard Motor
Hi Sam, it is the 6HP I was referring to.
