Greetings S2ers!
Some of you may have read below about our bad luck with a keel that delaminated or as I put it, "Exploded". A lot of promises and prices were discussed, but it seems none of the local boat shop guys around Texas want anything to do with it. So, long story short, we bought another S2 7.9. (Hull #128) and pulled the keel out of it, cleaned it up and stuck it in our boat. It fit perfect and we are out sailing again! That made the wife happy.
Now, I am left with the donor. It is a bit of a beater boat. Need advice on how I should get rid of it. Trying to decide whether I should try to sell it as a project boat to somebody who has the time, knowledge and money to fix her back up. Or should I cut her up and haul her off to the dump.
Here are the particulars:
PROs
- Deck is in good shape. Power washed it and it is nicer looking than mine. Feels solid and I haven't found any soft spots.
- Hull gel coat is in good condition. Should buff out nice.
- Has Mast, Boom and Spin Pole.
- Sits on a very nice double axle trailer.
- Doesn't seem to have any major leaks anywhere. I picked it up after we had a day with over 2 inches of rain. Interior and contents were amazingly dry
CONS
- Has my infamous "exploded" keel in it.
- Rudder is water logged. (Really heavy)
- Starboard chain plate bulkhead is rotted through. Deck around chain plate seems fine. But, I'm no expert and don't have a moisture meter.
- Interior is rough. I'm thinking it may have have been underwater at some point? It is from Alabama. Will try to get more history on it.
- Deck gear is all original or really old if not original.
- No running rigging worth keeping.
- Mast needs to be painted.
- Comes with a bunch of old sails in mostly bad shape. (I list this as a con, you may not!) Have not taken inventory yet.
PRO and or CON
- Inboard engine was seized and pulled out. Replacement BMW D7 one cylinder diesel engine from another 7.9 was thrown in the back of my truck when I picked the boat up. (Supposedly runs.)
Anyhoo, here is a quick photo album of most of the boat: https://www.flickr.com/gp/194589850@N06/9qAGzD
I plan on cleaning up the interior enough to get good shots of inside soon. Will add to Flickr album.
Just need to know if I should try to sell or scrap it.
Also, figure out a price. All offers will be considered!
Cheers!

Re: Sell or Scrap?
I would sell as project boat. Just my 2 cents.
Two guys in my club bought #68 (I think) and they did a great job in fixing it up. Needed entire new cockpit floor, some deck issues around the mast. Inboard problems. They never painted the mast, but that's not a functional problem.
Glad you're out sailing again! Things are icing up here, although I shouldn't complain, we sailed all through October and pulled the last day of the month. Longest fall in history too.
Good luck!

Re: Sell or Scrap?
I would definitely sell. Seen worse than that. Have you looked at the boats for sale on this site ?? Not a one left and I suspect there must have been a doozer or two in there. Supply of used boats is thin and supply of boats is very limited. I would repair it myself then sell. If the boat came from Alabama wondering if it's a hurricane victim.
Re: Sell or Scrap?
A little late to the party but S2, I believe, still has the molds for the rudder and keel. You might contact them. They make up the glass skins and you move the lead and new foam and bond the two halves together. Good luck.
Re: Sell or Scrap?
I think that board can be repaired w/o too much difficulty.
OK, so re-built might be a better term to use.
Elsewhere on this site are discussions about how to go about it.

Good News Everyone!
Sold the "Keel Donor" Boat. Headed to Kentucky to be lovingly restored. Hopefully you'll see Hull #128 on a racecourse near you!
Cheers!
