spinnaker halyard

Post by Tont Steven »

What is the usual setup for the Spinnaker Halyard? My mast has two sheaves side by side below the forestay attachment. The class rules say only standard halyards but some posts would indicate that a seperate spinnaker halyard is used and these are two jib halyards. If a seperate spinnaker halyard is permited how is it set-up, sheave box or bail & block.

Thanks

These are the only two halyard sheaves. Typical set up is to use the starboard halyard coming out of the exit box near the deck for the spinnaker, that way as you go into a weather mark your bow guy can jump the halyard from the weather side at the mast. A cam cleat is also generally installed below the exit box, so that the bow man can cleat it off after he/she jumps the halyard. We cross our halyards inside the spar so that the halyard exiting the port sheave comes out of the starboard exit box at the bottom of the spar. Our jib halyard is in the starboard sheave up top and port exit box down low.
