Yanmar alternator wiring

Post by J.D. Kloss »

Successfully installed a rebuilt engine in Ambivalence (hull #8) but the alternator isn't charging. It checks out OK on a test bench, and I'm told that it is probably not getting a "charge" signal from the ignition switch.

The old alternator had three posts and a two conductor plug. Posts were for +, ground and ignition (blue wire). The wiring diagram shows those three but no leads into a plug.

New alternator has only two posts (+ & -) and a two connector plug. I'm told that should be enough -- but it's not charging.

Can anybody tell me what's going on and how to fix it?

(the charge warning light comes on when the key is turned but the buzzer doesn't sound -- is that clue that the problem is on the instrument panel?)
