dagger board block

Post by jfabac »

During a race yesterday I found one cheek plate on the daggerboard block had corroded in two.

I checked my catalogs and could not find anything that looked like it. I understand there is a 4 to 1 kit available, but can the original 3 to 1 block still be found? If so, where?

John, I went with the 4:1 system 2 years ago. I could not find a block to replace the original-I looked in all the catalogs. I had an old Schaeffer block that did the job. I had to drill out the pressed in spindle on the schieves (sp) and replace them with stainless bolts to attach the block to the tang. There is a diagram somewhere that shows how to convert to 4:1 by welding an eye to the deck fitting. Someone suggested to me that I just drill a hole in the deck plate and run the line thru instead (with a stopper knot) this has worked well. You can pull up on the knot when the line is slack to inspect it for wear.

Shafer Block 505-38

Post by jbooher »

The replacement block that you need is the Shafer 505-38. This block has a 1/4 inch bolt that is removeable and fits the predrilled hole on the bar. If you want to go 4 to 1 then purchase two blocks and mount on both sides of the bar that comes out of the keel. You will need a 2 1/2 inch bolt to do this. Shafer's web site www.shafer.com\hardware.asp. Klick on Blocks and then Ulitity to find the block. This block is not cheap and West Marine or others will order it for you.
