Genoa Lead Cars

Post by yves springuel »

Has anyone figured out what genoa lead car replaces the Schafer large shive ones that I think are original to the boat?
I have trolled all the usual suspect web sites and twice purchased cars that did not fit (too snug).
Thanks

Jib car sheaves

Post by Jim Kloss »

Had the same problem. 7 Seas in Minneapolis finally just replaced the sheaves in the old cars. The repair has held up just fine.

Oddly I have new Schaefer cars and they do not properly fit the OEM T-Track. Also have replaced original sheaves.

On a side note, does anyone still use the old genoa deck turning blocks ?

Genoa Turning blocks

Post by tpf »

I have used the Genoa Turning blocks in the past when we cross sheeted the genoa. We used the blocks to run the genoa sheet to the winch on the weather side of the boat. It worked nice for keeping the weight on the high side of the boat but made the cockpit a bit cluttered.

I did the same thing. I ordered two differnet one and nothing fit. I finally found some at Holland Marine in TOronto I think. They had a set that fit just fine. I can't remember what brand and model number they were but if you are interested I will look at the boat. They are a little big but thay were all I could find. They really work great.

We replaced ours since the sheeves had stopped turning. We got OEM Schaefer 32-88 or 32-98 from Rigging Only, after we measured our track width. The folks at RO are great!!

Likewise, I purchased a set of schafer cars recommended for the OEM track and they did not fit.

I put them in a vice and used my dremel to carefully clean them out. It didn't take much. They already fit on the track but were snug where the track curved, so it was quite easy.

Try contacting Schaeffer Marine in mass. They may be able to repair the cars. I am sending a set fron #264 to have the sheaves replaced.
On Frequent Flyer #538 they are Harken cars that Harken just repaired for me. Great job

Contact Schaeffer Marine. They will sell you the replacement sheaves. They are aluminum instead of the original nylon sheaves. You can use a 1/4" SS Carriage bolt approximately 2 1/2" long for the axle. They work great. I replaced mine on Rebel 2 years ago and they work great.

genoa car sheaves

Schaefer won't sell replacement sheaves (at least to me) for some kind of "saftey" issue. Anyone try Garhaurer cars? Will they fit on the track?

The blocks I got from Holland Marine are Fico. They are on page 374 of the HMP online catalog and are on the bottom of the page. THey are a little spendy but fit just fine and function great. We have had them for 2 years. THey look a little big when you get them but they are the only one I had found.

Adjustable headsail cars

Post by Fred Chadsey »

I notice all the description about genoa car replacements and I had same troubles not find satistfactory units. I gave up and went to an adjustable system from Layline and it works great !! The costs is about 3 times as great but the Harken system is super for quick & underload settings. I would think most of S2 7.9 boats would be already revised ! Is there any class rules that prevent adjustable cars ?

Fred,
Yes, there is a rule against them.

A1.B.5. The production genoa track is the only allowed track, use of a "towable" sliding car with associated hardware is
not allowed.

We have used RiggingOnly as a source for our replacements.
Thanks,

Replacement Genoa Cars

Post by Jeffry Vanderveen »

Actually I sent the cars in to Shaefer and THEY replaced the sheaves in the cars. This was 2 years ago and they work fine now. Bit of work as you need to remove the track end to remove the car. This may resolve the safety issue as they did the work mentioned above.

So do the Schaefer 32-77 not work on the stock track? Same specs as the Schaefer 32-88?
