I learned a maintence lesson the hard way and thought I'd pass my learning along:
Every few years remove the cover on the front of the engine where the hand crank goes in. It's secured with 4 large allen head screws. inside is a gear riding on a needle bearing inside the cover. The grease in there dries up after a while and the bearing siezes, damaging the bearing and the cover. Cleaning out the old grease and replacing it every few seasons will prevent this, saving $150ish in parts and a lot of trial and error trying to find the screeching noise it was causing! It sounded like the main bearings or water pump bearings were at fault but this was much simpler to fix.
